A Letter to International Undergraduate Students Majoring in Software Engineering
Date:2026-07-07

Dear Students,

Greetings! Having traveled across mountains and seas to pursue your dreams at Nanchang University, we warmly welcome you as new members of the School of Software, Nanchang University (SSNCU). Studying far away from home may bring you excitement as well as anxiety. We hope this letter will help you get familiar with your studies here at an early date. We will stand by your side so that you can make steady progress and successfully complete your degree.

I. About the Major

Software Engineering is a national first-class undergraduate program with more than 20 years of development history and remarkable achievements in talent cultivation. International undergraduate students have been enrolled in this program since 2023. The training curriculum is compatible with that of domestic Chinese students. International students share the same teaching resources and receive identical education. Courses are delivered entirely in English, and international students are organized into separate classes.

The Software Engineering program comprises public foundation courses and professional education courses. Public foundation courses are compulsory, focusing primarily on culture, physical education, and foundational mathematics, accounting for 31.78% of the total credits. Professional education courses, which account for 68.22%, are further divided into professional basic courses (compulsory), professional core courses (compulsory), and professional elective courses (required). These professional courses form the backbone of the software engineering curriculum, covering knowledge for a deep understanding of computer systems, programming languages for software development, engineering techniques for building complex software systems, and knowledge and technologies from various optional application domains. These courses are designed to help you systematically master computer knowledge, develop software development skills, and gain the ability to solve complex software engineering system problems. The program places special emphasis on engineering practice, and it is a standard requirement to continuously strengthen your professional skills and competitiveness through innovative practice in various projects.

II. Administrative Arrangements

We adopt a separate management model for daily life and academic studies. The International Education College (IEC) is responsible for daily general affairs, while SSNCU (Qingshanhu Campus) takes charge of all teaching activities. Specifically, you will reside at Qianhu Campus and attend classes primarily at Qingshanhu Campus. This arrangement facilitates centralized management and specialized academic instruction.

The teaching team for the Software Engineering program comprises experienced faculty with international perspectives, including professors and associate professors from the university, technical experts from enterprises, and international instructors. Many faculty members have overseas visiting or research experience. SSNCU provides comprehensive teaching resources, including professional laboratories, experimental computer rooms, GPU server resources, extracurricular innovation bases, library facilities, and processing tools, as well as off-campus internship and practice bases. These resources provide ample shared facilities for faculty and students to carry out various teaching and learning activities. You can apply for access to library and other platform resources using your student ID numbers, borrow learning materials, and sign up for various practical activities, sharing resources with Chinese students.

III. Communication Guidelines

During your stay on campus, you may encounter challenges related to cultural differences, varying academic foundations, different teaching styles, and adjusting to a new living environment. Please do not be overly anxious—this is a common experience for young international students in China, and these challenges can be gradually overcome through your own efforts and with the support of faculty and fellow students. We will accompany and witness your growth and progress!

Therefore, if you encounter any issues related to daily life and need assistance or wish to provide feedback, please contact the counselors or relevant staff at IEC on Qianhu Campus. If you encounter any issues related to teaching and learning and need assistance or wish to provide feedback, please contact Ms. Chen Ai at the International Cooperation and Exchange Office of SSNCU on Qingshanhu Campus (WeChat: lisa6606car). If you have questions about specific courses, please feel free to interact with your instructors during class. After class, you can reach out to your instructors or academic advisors via WeChat, email, or the online teaching platform (Chaoxing Xuexitong). All faculty members are happy to answer your questions patiently and provide assistance. At the same time, we also encourage senior students to help new arrivals. Please unite and support each other to overcome difficulties and enjoy your college life.

IV. Future Development

Upon completing 140 credits as stipulated in the curriculum and passing HSK Level 4, you will be awarded a bachelor's degree. Upon graduation, you will acquire solid engineering skills, teamwork ability, self-learning abilities, professional competencies, and a sound value orientation. These achievements will lay a solid foundation for your careers in the software industry after graduation.

You will also have a wide range of development pathways to choose from: you may continue your graduate studies in China; you may enter enterprises to engage in software technology development, management, education, and other fields, benefiting from China's industrial development opportunities; or you may return to your home country or go elsewhere to start a business or pursue careers in the digital economy, artificial intelligence, smart cities, and other sectors, becoming outstanding software technology or management professionals and serving as a bridge for technological and cultural exchange between China and other countries.

We hope you will always remember your original aspiration for studying in China. In the era of AI technological empowerment, we encourage you to explore boldly, engage actively in practice, deepen your expertise, refine your language skills, and seize opportunities. At the same time, we urge you to be diligent and disciplined, strictly observe university rules and regulations, actively participate in cultural exchange activities, and strive to become high-caliber applied software technology professionals with solid expertise and a good understanding of Chinese culture.

SSNCU will continue to improve and optimize the software engineering training system and various resources through our collective efforts, providing high-quality teaching resources, services, and internship and employment opportunities to support your growth and success.

Dear students, SSNCU is not only a launching pad for your future careers but also a warm family for your academic and personal life. As an old saying goes: “Diligent people keep their words and make every journey worthwhile.” We hope you will embrace the challenges of learning with youthful vigor, rise to difficulties, seize the opportunities of the times, enhance your innovative and practical abilities, and build a solid professional foundation. Stay united and care for one another as a class, safeguard collective interests, and foster a spirit of collaboration. In doing so, we are confident that you will achieve academic success and enjoy a bright and promising future.

Sincerely,

School of Software
